The CEO of United States streamer Hulu has stepped down from his position to become chairman of Sony Pictures Television (SPT), with a Fox exec taking his place.

Randy Freer will exit his post at Fox Networks Group, where he served as president and COO, to take over as Hulu CEO.

According to Recode, Hopkins, who was CEO at Hulu since 2013, will report to new Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Tony Vinciquerra.

In his time at Hulu, Hopkins helped almost triple the company's market valuation, according to a release from Sony TV on Tuesday announcing his new position.

Hopkins' departure from Hulu was highly unexpected.

After winning the Emmys with "The Handmaid's Tale", it's unclear how Hulu is actually doing.

Hulu's board of directors thanked Hopkins for his work in building up the streaming platform during his four years as CEO.

Hopkins will serve as chairman of Sony Pictures TV, where its slate includes "Better Call Saul", "The Blacklist", and "The Goldbergs". Replacing him will be Randy Freer, who is another Fox executive.

Three execs were promoted to new jobs in the wake of that reshuffle, while Wayne Garvie was upped to president of global production at SPT more recently.

Hopkins said leading Hulu had been "the single most meaningful experience of my career". He will be based at Hulu headquarters in Los Angeles. "Mike is a proven and innovative leader who has played a key role in redefining today's television landscape, both for consumers and for how content producers reach them".

"I want to thank [Fox bosses] Rupert, Bob, James, Lachlan and the entire Hulu board for giving me this opportunity, and I am especially grateful to the more than 2,000 Hulugans who make Hulu such an inspiring place to be".
