Seven in 10 M'sian kids worry a lot about bullying

Notwithstanding global progress, one in 12 children worldwide live in countries where their prospects "are worse than those of their parents", according to a UNICEF analysis released on the World Children's Day today.

Among the other results: nine in ten kiwi children believe the world would be a better place if world leaders listened to children.

Officially established on Nov 20, 1989, World Children's Day marks the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

UNICEF added in a statement that Malaysian children also anxious a lot about other global issues like violence against children (64 per cent) and terrorism (60 per cent). According to the survey findings, 96% of children believed that their opinion is appreciated by their families while 87% believed that their opinion is appreciated by their teachers.

The global survey, which asked kids about issues that were important to them, also found that 69 per cent of Kiwi kids anxious about natural disasters personally affecting them, 62 per cent about mistreatment or bullying, and 53 per cent about threats to nature.

The analysis said "children in India worry a lot about violence against children (70 per cent) and poor education (70 per cent)".

Unicef's Child Rights Education Advisor, Jacqui Southey isn't surprised it's an issue but is surprised by the size of the issues.

"Barack Obama, Cristiano Ronaldo, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are the most popular names for children to invite to their birthday party, with the former President of the United States featuring in the top five in nine of the 14 countries", the UN agency said in a statement.

"They also have opinions about issues affecting them closer to home and the comparative findings of the global survey highlight issues of particular concern to Malaysian children compared to others, bullying for example, and this should be taken seriously and addressed". Children in India, meanwhile, felt the most empowered.

World Children's Day is a day "for children, by children", whenchildren from around the world will be taking over key roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to express their concerns about what global leaders should be focusing on, and to voice support for the millions of their peers who are facing a less hopeful future.

She said children are hugely affected by bullying and we need to include them as part of the solution.
