OnePlus 5T Does Not Support HD Viewing on Most Streaming Platforms

The deficiency meanwhile can be traced to the phone's lack of support for the right DRM level needed for HD playback of Netflix content. Digging further, the limitation can be locked onto the phone's incompatibility with Google's Widevine Level 1 DRM that is needed for HD streaming.

Without the aforementioned certification, OnePlus 5 (and 5T) owners, despite the device having Optic AMOLED screen will only able to watch the media content on low SD (Standard Definition) 640x480p resolution.

As the post points out, the reason for this is that OnePlus devices, includes OnePlus 5T and others, does not come with "Widevine L1 Certification" which is required to play HD content from DRM protected services.

Over at the official OnePlus forums, users have been complaining about this for over a week now.

The guys over at The Verge have confirmed that the content streamed on the handset in Amazon Prime Video and Netflix is SD content and not HD. There are two levels of Widevine Security Levels available on Android platform - L1, and L3.

The issue comes as a surprise as OnePlus 5 and 5T devices pack extremely powerful hardware. In our tests, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video both looked noticeably pixelated on the 5T, even when both apps were set to stream at the highest possible quality and the phone was connected to a fast Wi-Fi network.

The did not give any time frame or talked about the update for the OnePlus 5. OnePlus claims to have fixed the issue from its side but Snapchat is apparently still to address it in its latest update.
