Pre-cut watermelon and cantaloupe have been linked to a Salmonella outbreak

OR health officials said late Friday they are investigating two cases of salmonellosis linked to a regional outbreak of the disease involving pre-cut melon sold at OR and Washington grocery stores. In Oregon, one case was in Mutlnomah county and the other was in Wasco County, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

Anyone who bought pre-cut watermelon or cantaloupe - or mixed fresh fruit products containing watermelon or cantaloupe - in Washington or OR is urged to throw it away, according to an alert from the Washington Department of Health. The Oregon incidents, however, did not require hospitalization.

Both Oregonians bought the fruit from Fred Meyer stores but the OHA is still investigating and won't say which locations. Meanwhile, public health officials in OR and Washington are advising people who purchased the products between October 25 and December 1 to immediately throw them away. State and federal officials are trying to determine what company supplied the fruit and whether any is still on store shelves. Lab results identified Salmonella Newport as the cause of the sickness, officials said.

Symptoms of Salmonella are diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 1-3 days after exposure and lasts for 4-7 days. Infants, elderly people and individuals with weakened immune systems are more susceptible than others. In severe cases, the infection can be fatal.
