Global confidence in USA leadership under Trump at new low, poll finds

The worldwide approval rating for USA leadership under President Donald Trump is at a new low of 30 percent, Gallup World Polling found. The world's approval of USA leadership in 2017 dropped 18 percentage points from 2016, the last year of President Barack Obama's Administration, and was four points lower than in 2008, the final year of President George W. Bush's Administration, which had been the previous nadir.

During Obama's past year in office, 48 percent of countries polled approved of the United States' leadership. Approval of U.S. leadership plummeted in every country in the region in 2017.

President Trump's first year on the job garnered him historically low approval ratings.

With its stable approval rating of 41%, Germany has replaced the U.S.as the top-rated global power in the world. US leadership approval increased 10 points or more in just four countries: Belarus, Israel, Macedonia and Liberia.

The US did score big in another area, though, with America's disapproval rating reaching new heights of 43 percent, falling far behind Germany (25 percent), China (30 percent) and Russian Federation (36 percent).

Indeed, only 30 percent of people around the globe now approve of US leadership.

Gallup's managing partner, Jon Clifton said: "This year marks a significant change in our trends".

Portugal, Belgium, Norway and Canada led the declines, with approval ratings dropping 40 points or more in each country.

The world confidence in the leadership of the has fallen to an all-time low with Washington ranking below China in approval ratings worldwide. The new figures mark the first time since 2007 that more global residents disapproved of United States leadership than approved of it (the figures were equivalent in 2008, each at 34 per cent).

If the US was a domestic political candidate, this sudden dive "under water" in approval ratios would be alarming. Only a median 24 percent approved of USA leadership, while a whopping 58 percent disapproved U.S. leadership.

Africa as a whole remained the bright spot for USA leadership approval, as it has been for the past decade.

The Gallup results released on Thursday are based on face-to-face and telephone interviews with some 1,000 adults aged 15 and older in each country or region.
