Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has no idea what groceries cost

Bill Gates The Ellen De Generes Show

Bill Gates must be so used to seeing numbers with extra zeros at the end that he has forgotten how much everyday items cost.

According to the rules of the game, if Gates could guess how much three out of five grocery items cost, within a dollar of the actual price, he and the audience would win.

So wealthy, in fact, that he doesn't need to go to the grocery store, a state of affairs recently confirmed by Ellen DeGeneres.

The Microsoft founder made his first appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and in true Ellen fashion, she didn't let him leave before playing a silly game: "Bill's Grocery Bills".

Guessing just $4, to the laughter of everyone in the studio, Gates was still pretty far off with his final guess of $10. Gates, who admitted that the last time he'd been to a supermarket was "a long time ago", thought a bag of Totino's Pizza Rolls was $22.00.

Ellen revealed that they were in fact only $8.98 after Bill lowered his guess to $8, with a little help from the audience. For a box of Tide Pods laundry detergent, he guessed $4 when it really cost almost $20. But on one item, at least, he was spot on, guessing dental floss cost around $4.

In the game, Gates guessed that $1 Rice-a-Roni cost $5. Get it? Because he's worth like 90-some billion dollars and probably hasn't set foot in a grocery store since before Pudding Pops were discontinued.
