Del Toro's win marks the fourth time in five years that a Mexican director has walked away with the best director awards.

Alfonso Cuarón won best director for "Gravity" in 2014, Alejandro Iñárritu won in both 2015 and 2016 for "Birdman" and "The Revenant", respectively. The film's studio, Fox Searchlight, has denied the allegations.

"The Shape of Water" tells the story of a mute cleaning lady, Eliza (Sally Hawkins) who conspires with her gay friend and neighbour (Richard Jenkins) and her co-worker (Octavia Spencer) to rescue a muscular merman that is being held captive in a secret Cold War-era government laboratory.

Del Toro described his films to Reuters earlier this year as "fairytales for modern times". Director del Toro also picked up a Golden Globe back in January and a BAFTA.
