Kia 48V Mild Hybrid Diesel powertrain

Kia 48V Mild Hybrid Diesel powertrain

In line with Kia's aim to create innovative cars that are affordable for a broad range of buyers, EcoDynamics+ mild-hybrid technology offers a compelling cost-to-performance ratio compared to full hybrid powertrains.

Sportage will be the first model to offer the new EcoDynamics+ powertrain later in 2018.

Christened 'EcoDynamics+', the new mild-hybrid powertrain is paired with a 0.46 kWh 48-volt lithium-ion battery and uses a new mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) unit. By electronically controlling the MHSG using the inverter, the system switches seamlessly between two modes: "motor" and "generator". This allows the internal combustion engine to automatically turn off during braking and in-gear deceleration, whereas the MHSG can re-ignite it whenever the driver presses the throttle. In the 1st mode, when accelerating the auto gets up to 10 kW extra electricity, thereby facilitates the work of the main engine and as a outcome decreases the number of harmful emissions.

The system uses a mild-hybrid starter/generator (MHSG) unit which replaces the standard alternator found in 12V vehicles. When braking mode is activated the generator, which charges the battery from the kinetic energy. The 48 volt generator recharges the vehicle's battery when the diesel engine is running. There'll be a mode for harnessing energy released during braking to recharge the 48v battery and a "moving stop and start" function that can switch off the engine as you're slowing down, before the auto has come to a complete halt. Depending on vehicle, the 48V battery can be mounted beneath the trunk floor, freeing up interior space.

Controlled by an advanced ECU, the powertrain benefits from a new "Moving Stop & Start" function. Charge from the 48V battery helps to start the engine in most conditions. Kia will use the tech to reduce the emissions of its diesel line-up by a claimed four per cent over the WLTP cycle. The adoption of the MHSG also means the conventional starter motor can be downsized and used primarily for cold starts at low temperatures.

Kia adds that the system is equally compatible with manual and automatic transmissions, and front, rear or all-wheel drive layouts.
