Apple has 83 safety drivers taking part in this project who will be supervising the vehicles.

There are 409 total self driving cars.

That makes it the second largest fleet in the state, behind only GM's Cruise.

One important thing to note here is that Apple has yet to apply for a separate driverless testing permit, which would allow the company to test autonomous vehicles without a person in the auto.

On Tuesday, the sources said, "Apple has almost doubled the number of self-driving cars in its California test fleet". Apple had only three cars on the road in 2017 before expanding to 27 this January and is now up to 55.

He added, "We sort of see autonomous cars as the mother of all AI projects It's probably one of the most hard AI projects actually to work on". The next step, of course, is to test these sensor-equipped vehicles without drivers.

As of now, the DMV has not issued any permits for complete driverless testing because for that to happen, companies must have to have a pre-testing of the vehicles in controlled conditions. MacReports first reported some of the new details of Apple's fleet. The company's Project Titan was first developed in 2014 as a future rival to Tesla.

Apple hasn't really detailed its plans for the self-driving project that it has got going on but the company is steadily increasing the number of resources that it has chose to this project. Despite the recent steps it's made, analysts predict we won't be seeing cars with fruit logos driving around until at least 2020.
