Fiat Chrysler confirms Australians affected by mass recall due to cruise control

The Problem: If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fiat Chrysler said vehicles may be placed in park once stopped, at which point cruise-control is canceled. In an "an unlikely sequence of events", automatic acceleration could occur simultaneously with an electrical network short-circuit and could prevent a driver from being able to cancel cruise control, according to the company. No injuries have been reported, and the issue has reportedly only happened once.

"Once you are stopped, use the shifter and put the vehicle into Park", which will disengage cruise control. The Italian-American automaker said it's unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the flaw.

Fiat Chrysler says the condition can occur if the cruise control accelerates at the same time an electrical short-circuit happens, but the brakes are created to overpower the engine and the vehicles could still be stopped.

The carmaker, which in 2015 was hit with penalties from USA regulators totalling $175m (£131m) for safety lapses, did not say how much the recalls would cost.

The company emphasized drivers could overpower the system by continuously applying the brakes until the vehicle stopped or the vehicle could be stopped by shifting into neutral and braking.

Fiat Chrysler has vowed to improve safety procedures after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2015 imposed $175 million in civil penalties for safety lapses.

Fiat Chrysler said recall repairs would be free of charge and it would begin alerting affected customers as early as next week.
