First death reported from E. Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce

The hospitalization rate of 51 percent is far higher than usual, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infections have sickened a total of 121 people in 25 states, an increase of 23 people and three states since last week.

Since the first cases in early April, local grocers have gotten many questions and are still seeing concerns from customers about what's being put on the shelves.

The death was reported in California, but state and federal health officials did not provide any other details.

The growing season in Yuma ended about a month ago, said the University of Arizona's Russell Engel, the director of Yuma County's cooperative extension service. People usually get sick two to eight days after ingesting the bacteria, and most people recover within one week.

One person in California has died from the ongoing E. Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. State health officials are investigating another potential case. This is the first death from this outbreak. "If you have symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and vomiting, we urge you to contact your healthcare provider". This advice includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, baby romaine, organic romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.

"The FDA has stated they can not be certain that romaine lettuce from the Yuma region is no longer in the supply chain due to the 21-day shelf life", said Laura Cronquist, epidemiologist with the NDDoH.

Anyone who has eaten romaine lettuce and developed symptoms of E. coli infection should immediately seek medical attention and tell their doctors about their possible exposure pathogen.
