The new docuseries will focus on the 1999 murder of U.S. high school student Hae Min Lee, the police investigation that followed and the conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed. Although it has been in production since 2015, a release date for the series has not yet been announced.

4 months later, retired Decide Martin Welch, who beforehand denied Syed's request for a retrial, vacated his conviction, and ordered a brand new trial.

Director of Programming, Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, Zai Bennett said, "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide".

Syed was convicted of murdering his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999; the podcast examined evidence and, as its executive producer Julie Snyder told NPR, showed that "the story that the state presented at trial could not have happened".

The impact of the podcast "Serial" continues to be felt. We'll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked about murder cases in recent years. The series also includes "exclusive access to Adnan Syed, his family and his lawyers", as Berg "has been closely following their efforts to obtain justice, with the outcome still to be determined - and possibly shaped by the investigation pursued within the series itself". Syed has always said he is innocent and, since his story garnered wider attention, he has been granted a new trial. The questionable reliability of the cellphone data that linked Syed to the crime scene and a new alibi witness were presented in court, leading The State of Maryland to appeal the lower court judge's ruling.

The series will have a soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Working Title TV and Instinct Productions are producing the series.
