HTC is making a blockchain friendly phone called the 'Exodus'

The HTC Exodus is a blockchain-powered smartphone

The phone is called Exodus and it's being imaged as a phone that gives users the agency to "take back the internet", telling social media sites to "let my data go" and leaving individuals' information in literally their own hands, not in the centralized servers of Facebook and Google. Called Exodus, it will uniquely feature a universal wallet and a built-in secure hardware enclave. Ultimately, HTC says that each Exodus will act as a node for the bitcoin and ethereum blockchains - so that every phone increases the overall size and scope of the network. If that doesn't get you Mr. Robot fanboys going, I don't know what will.

HTC's new blockchain initiative is being spearheaded by Phil Chen, who led the company's virtual reality headset platform HTC Vive.

HTC has not shared any release date or price of the phone but it has been now listed on its website for bookings.

HTC's yet to announce pricing for its Exodus phone, but when it does go on sale, customers will be able to purchase it using, you guessed it, cryptocurrency. Moving forward, however, his new title will be "decentralized chief officer".

The unique selling point of a blockchain smartphone is that it supposedly offers better security and an improved user experience by integrating cold wallet storage right into the device, and enabling direct trading of the native cryptocurrency with peers without mining fees.

The HTC Exodus exists separately from HTC's main phone business, and it is not the same phone planned for HTC's May 23 announcement. Last September, Sirin Labs announced a $1,000 blockchain-powered handset which is slated to launch in October 2018.

Smartphone manufacturer HTC is taking a major leap into the cryptocurrency ecosystem and wider blockchain industry.

HTC isn't the first to tout a blockchain phone. Mobile apps of cryptocurrency exchanges are driving phone makers to adopt blockchain.
