Iran attacks Israel with rockets after deal torn up

"In light of what is now happening in Syria, it is necessary to ensure the continued coordination", Netanyahu said as he departed for Moscow, just hours after reports said fighter jets struck Iranian missiles trained on Israel south of Damascus.

Although Putin and Netanyahu are at odds over the former's backing of Iran and stance in the Syrian civil war, the Israeli leader said that relations between Moscow and Israel remained strong.

Earlier on Tuesday night, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States was pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and imposing new sanctions on the Islamic Republic, in part due to Iran's destabilizing activities in Syria. He said Israel had responded, but did not provide details.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus says Syrian air defenses fired dozens of anti-aircraft missiles, but no Israeli planes were harmed.

Syrian state television was broadcasting footage of its air defenses firing at incoming rockets and playing patriotic songs.

Rebel-linked sources reported that the strike was aimed at an Iranian military installation and resulted in the death of several Iranian servicemen.

Syrian media earlier said the hostilities began with Israeli fire at Syrian positions in southern Syria from across the border.

Eight Iranians were among those killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.

His statement came as the Israeli-occupied section of the Golan Heights was placed on high alert due to "irregular activity by Iranian forces" across the demarcation line in Syria.

Within two hours of the White House announcement, Syrian state news agency SANA reported explosions in Kisweh, south of Damascus.

"After identifying irregular activities of Iranian forces in Syria, the army chose to modify the instructions for civil defense in the Golan heights and instructed local authorities to unlock and to prepare bomb shelters in the area", - the document says.

On Wednesday, Netanyahu said Iran was calling for Israel's destruction and therefore posed a threat.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the attack on the weapons depot near Damascus.

Shapiro also commended President Donald Trump's "completely correct and fearless rejection of the Iran deal".

In February, Israel shot down what it said was an armed Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace. Iran has vowed revenge after blaming Israel for a series of deadly airstrikes on Iranian positions in Syria.

Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah have been helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad beat back a seven-year-old rebellion.

Relations plunged even further into perilous territory on Tuesday after Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal, risking the prospect of conflict in the Middle East.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Russian Federation in late March focused on Israel's concerns over Iran's growing influence in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Lebanon. "I think that matters were presented in a direct and forthright manner, and this is important".

Israel's assessment is that Iran seeks to settle its open account with Israel, but wants to do so without sparking a war. "They are determined to do it and we are determined to prevent it". "We attended very moving events - the parade marking the victory over the Nazis and other events, and of course there were also good and useful talks".
