Speaking to journalists in the Old City, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat hailed the United States embassy move as the beginning of "a new world order".

They also voted together to block the release of a statement by the European Union rejecting USA plans to officially open its Embassy Monday in Jerusalem.

The move prompted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to halt ties with the Trump administration, declaring it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks.

The US president's daughter said she was returning "with great joy" to Jerusalem, which Donald Trump has recognised as Israel's capital to the dismay of Palestinians, who claim part of the holy city as the capital of a future state. Since the end of March, weekly protests haven taken place there every Friday.

Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel group in the US, expressed concern that the embassy move would backfire.

Jerusalem's status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "What does he have to do with Jerusalem, ?" says another young man, on his way to Damascus Gate, one of the main entrances to the Old City.

Protesters are demanding the right to return to their homes in historical Palestine, from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.

He said Shifa has been badly affected by a decade-long Israeli-Egyptian blockade imposed after the Islamic militant group Hamas assumed control of Gaza. Trump has said the opening is meant to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment.

Rival Palestinian faction Fatah, led by the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah that governs parts of the occupied West Bank, signed a reconciliation agreement with Hamas under Egypt's auspices in October 2017, but the terms of the agreement signed in the Egyptian capital have not been implemented.

Various countries once had embassies based in Jerusalem but many moved after a 1980 law saw the country explicitly claim the city's east, despite United Nations objections.

"There continues to be real anger among Palestinians" over Trump's decision, the CBC's Derek Stoffel said from Jerusalem.

The announcement does not concern Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, where responding to protests is the responsibility of the police.

The festivities will kick off on Sunday, with a reception hosted by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Israel says it will not tolerate a breach and will defend its border and nearby communities.
