Nepalese veteran Sherpa guide Kami Rita 48 climbed Mount Everest for the record 22nd time

Kami Rita Sherpa, 48, stepped atop the peak of the 8,848-meter mountain, the world's highest, at 8.30 a.m., beating the record he shared with fellow guides Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa, who have both climbed the mountain 21 times and do not have plans to climb it again.

Kami Rita first scaled Everest at age 24, and has made the trip nearly every year since then. Ani Lhakpa Sherpa summited from the North and the 44-year-old has now set a new female record, beating the record she set a year ago.

Officials said Kami Rita reached the summit on Wednesday with a team of foreign climbers, while Lakpa Sherpa reached the peak from the Chinese side. He has climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 metres which include K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna.
