Olympique de Marseille forward Dimitri Payet has been ruled out of the World Cup because of injury, France's coach Didier Deschamps said on Thursday when he named his 23-man squad for the tournament in Russian Federation.

The Premier League pair were not in the 23-man group announced by coach Didier Deschamps.

Payet suffered hamstring injury and had to be replaced in the first half of Wednesday's Europa League final, where Marseille lost to Atletico Madrid 3-0.

For any who haven't paid close attention to Ligue 1 this season, Florian Thauvin's inclusion ahead of Martial could raise some eyebrows, but the Marseille man has racked up 26 goals and 18 assists in all competitions this season to the United star's 11 and nine.

"It always seems impossible until it's done", wrote Mendy on Twitter.

Deschamps has a wealth of attacking options despite the omissions of Lacazette and Martial, with Chelsea's Olivier Giroud competing with the likes of Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann, PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele for selection in Russian Federation.

"Just watch Mbappe's performance in this position against Russian Federation recently".

The attacking duo were instead included on an 11-strong standby list for the World Cup in Russian Federation.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who has a strained relationship with Deschamps and also missed Euro 2016, did not make the cut despite being regarded by many as the best French forward of his generation.

Another player to miss out was Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny, who ruptured an Achilles tendon playing against Atletico in the Europa League semi-finals.

The 29-year-old Nzonzi has just two caps. "I have put my faith in players who have responded to that, and the squad comes before everything else", Deschamps said.

France were placed in group C alongside Australia, Peru, and Denmark.

Before heading to Russian Federation, they will play three home friendlies, starting against the Republic of Ireland at the Stade de France on May 28.
