Knox, whose gritty toughness reflected his background as the son of a Western Pennsylvania steel worker, died Saturday after a lengthy battle with dementia, the Seahawks confirmed Sunday.

Knox's best work may have been in Seattle, where the Seahawks had not made the playoffs since entering the National Football League in 1976.

He immediately reeled off five straight seasons with 10-plus wins, including three consecutive berths in the NFC championship game from 1974 to 1976, then left to join the Bills. The Rams issued the following statement on his passing.
