"Our findings have the potential to inform health and safety policy and practice more broadly, particularly given the growing awareness of the levels of mental distress and suicide rates among workers in this industry". By proactively engaging racing staff with the campaign, Racing Welfare hopes to ensure that all those working within the industry know that the charity have a range of support services available should they or someone they know be struggling with their mental health.

County schools can also access the Northamptonshire Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TaMHS) programme, a multi-agency partnership which helps schools and teachers with training about mental health issues. "Coping with stress in the workplace starts with being able to have a conversation with your manager, and in a mentally healthy organisation everyone should feel comfortable talking about stress".

U.S. Rep. John Katko (R-NY), co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Mental Health Caucus, led a briefing on childhood depression and introduced a resolution to recognize May as Mental Health Month.

"Mental health affects the well-being of communities in every congressional district across the country, but many areas lack adequate resources to treat those in need", the members said in their joint statement.

"We have seen a marked increase in counselling about mental health, and fully expect it to continue". It's estimated that one-in-six working age adults experience depression, anxiety or stress-related illness at any one time, costing the United Kingdom business economy an estimated £70bn to £100bn every year and resulting in around 70m lost working days.

It's clear we have some way to go before the majority of workplaces achieve parity of esteem in the attention that good mental health receives compared with physical health, and the confidence and openness with which this aspect of health is treated.

Encouragingly, 40% said they feel their employer takes enough proactive steps to protect mental wellness and 61% said they feel they could speak up if they began to experience stress-related symptoms.

If there is a supportive dialogue between the employee and their line manager, it should be possible for an organisation to put in place supportive measures, such as adjustments to workload or a small change in working hours at an early stage that could make all the difference in some cases.

Newton Abbot Racecourse have teamed up with the mental health charity Mind for their Wednesday 16th May fixture, which has been called the Mind and Racing Welfare raceday, with Windsor Racecourse also hosting the Mental Health Foundation during racing on Monday 14th May. "Mentalhealth.org.uk explains that stress is not a mental health problem in itself - it is an adaptation to the situation we find ourselves in". Ask for active sponsorship from senior leaders, and empower everyone to think about ways they can help build an open, inclusive and supportive culture for people at work to thrive in.
