Michael Carrick: Success is coming at Manchester United

Once described by former United captain Nemanja Vidic as "the glue that holds it all together", Carrick said he was looking forward to a new role in the dugout next to the club's manager Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, Michael Carrick made an emotional farewell speech as his 12-year career as a United player came to an end.

United needed 11 minutes to claim a first corner.

Next came a moment that summed up United's season.

Carrick's superb long pass played Juan Mata in behind the defense and Marcus Rashford tapped into the goal in the 34th minute for the runners-up. It had Watford scrambling and stood out as a rare move of slickness and pace: a scarcity of that is the unwanted trademark of Mourinho's side this season.

Mourinho said on the United website that 42-year-old Faria, who he has worked with since 2001, was ideally situated now to become a manager in his own right.

Sometimes it's hard in the modern era for a player of his vintage to impose himself physically and one 50-50 saw him lose out to the solid figure of Roberto Pereyra.

Reports emerged that he had been seen driving away from the stadium in the hours before kick-off but Mourinho revealed a knee injury had kept him out.

Carrick wasn't the only one saluted in song.

That proved to be the trend for most of the half, which prompted Mourinho to introduce Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera for the final stages of the second half.

The midfielder had walked out to a guard of honour and on 80 minutes strode off the turf for the last time to a standing ovation.

Carrick's retirement means there are no more members remaining from United's 2007/08 Premier League and Champions League winning side - it well and truly being the end of an era at the club.

The five-time Premier League title victor has already moved into coaching this season after Mourinho assimilated him on to his coaching staff and the midfielder is delighted to get his opportunity.
