Chris Froome lost more seconds and the four-time Tour de France champion's chances of winning are all but over.

With Quick-Step Floors' star sprinter and overall points leader Elia Viviani, dropped along with Chaves, the race split into two as several teams in the peloton worked together to distance them.

Yates completed the 156km stage in 3:25:53, outsprinting Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands) to the line in a thrilling finish.

He had been reduced to a spectator's role in the battle for the pink jersey which for now is a two-horse race between Yates and Dumoulin.

SIMON YATES added three bonus seconds to his Giro d'Italia lead on stage ten but it was a tough day for his Mitchelton-Scott outfit as team-mate Esteban Chaves, who began in second place, dropped out of contention.

Yates stretched his advantage to 47 seconds over Dumoulin and 1:04 ahead of Thibaut Pinot, who is third overall. Tom was chasing me all the way to the line, ' Yates said. "I'm not going to lie it took a whack out of me that crash before the start over in Jerusalem, I've had a lot of pain down my right-hand side.

I did at the beginning with 12 other riders but, unfortunately, because of what happened to Chaves, the peloton came across", Mahoric said. "I'm motivated, the team's motivated and we're going to do as much as we can".
