A black bear stands in a wooded area in Newton Thomson Reuters (Reuters) - Wildlife rangers in Colorado were hunting a bear early Monday that attacked and tried to drag off a five-year-old girl from her yard.

Her mother told CPW officers she heard screaming and witnessed a large black bear dragging her daughter when she went to investigate. The bear eventually dropped the girl after the mother began screaming at it. Kimberly Cyr was taken St. Mary's Hospital with serious injuries, but CPW told KKCO her condition has been upgraded to "fair".

Paediatric surgeon Charles Breaux Jr said the bear apparently bit her but that she did not have any injuries to her brain or organs, and did not suffer any fractures.

Federal and state wildlife officers are using traps in an effort to capture the bear that is now considered unsafe. Wildlife officers in Mesa County are now searching for the bear to make sure no one else is attacked.

Authorities say the mother's move may have saved her daughter's life.

The 125lb and approximately two-year-old male bear suspected in the attack was shot by wildlife officers on Sunday night as it was walking up to a home about half a mile away from where the girl was attacked.

"The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear", said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises the public to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife to their residences by removing attractants, including trash, bird feeders and other potential sources of food.
