WhatsApp Gets New Group Features, Including Descriptions, Mentions, and Admin Controls

Groups are an important part of WhatsApp as they're used by families and friends to stay in touch with each other and even business teams to get work done.

Have you received the new WhatsApp update yet? WhatsApp suggests groups use the description space to clarify the objective, guidelines, or topics for that particular group.

WhatsApp introduced mention '@' feature for group chats back in 2016. This will then be visible in the group chat settings as well in-view when a new member first joins the group. WhatsApp Groups can have as many as 256 people and this will make this easy to do.

The features are available for Android and iPhone users today.

Chat platform WhatsApp is giving groups a makeover with a list of new features for group conversations. The group description will appear on top of the chat sitting just below the group name. Considering that Indian users account for roughly 250 million of WhatsApp's 1.5 billion monthly active users, it's a risky group to annoy. And there are a couple of changes directed at group chat administrators.

There are also new admin controls that restrict who can change items like the subject, icon and the description.

Group catch up: One of the most demanded features in Groups was a way to find out whether someone called you out at some point and you can straight dive into it. The Facebook-owned company also announced that it has made it harder for users to be re-added to groups they've left - an effort to reduce spam group invitations.

It is worth noting that not all of the new features are aimed exclusively at those in charge of groups as the update also brings with it a "participant search" feature which as the name suggests lets group members more easily search for and find other groups members.

In addition to these features, admins now also have the option to remove admin permissions of other group participants, whereas group creators can no longer be removed from the group they started.
