West Bengal: Stage set for Panchayat polls tomorrow amid tight-security

Violence reported in Bhangar, after a media vehicle has been torched and a camera broken. However, Ghosh claimed that he did not do it. The SEC said it has received a complaint and asked authorities to take action.

In Dinhata area of Coochbehar district in North Bengal, a few voters were injured after clashes broke out between two groups outside a polling station, the sources said. Police did not find voters or representatives of political parties inside the booth. Congress supporters alleged that Trinamool supporters captured booths.

TV channels aired footage of clashes between two groups of people inside a booth in Uttar Gazipur village in South 24 Parganas. A BJP worker was also killed in a bombing in Murshidabad. The violence has left seven dead and several injured despite heavy security in the state. In his letter, Samik Lahiri, CPI (M) secretary, South 24 Paraganas, alleged that Das had been threatened by TMC candidate Amit Mondol and his associates Shibaprasad Mondal, Chandan Giri, Sk Monirul, Gokul Jana among others. The TMC termed the allegations as baseless. "Forensic experts have been called", Sundarbans Coastal police district SP Tathagata Basu said. Samik Lahiri, CPI (M)- South 24 pgs District Secretary wrote to SEC, " I urge upon you to intervene and please ask the inert District Administration to act. According to a report, the voting began at 7am and will continue till 5pm. Trinamool Congress worker Arif Ali Gaji allegedly succumbed to his injuries in South 24 Parganas Kultali after allegedly shot by SUCI workers.

Soon after the polling began in the West Bengal panchayat elections on Monday morning, violence was reported from various parts of the state. There was a fast campaign for Panchayat elections in one phase.

# 02:23 PM: West Bengal Panchayat Poll: Ballot box being retrieved from a pond in West Bengal's Sonadangi. They also accused the TMC for inciting violence during the nomination process for the polls. The TMC rubbished the allegations and had said the oppositions do not have a mass base and are trying to evade the polls. These rural elections will be held in 621 zilla parishads and 6157 panchayat samitis, besides in 31,827 gram panchayats, spread across 20 districts. According to West Bengal SEC sources, of the 48,650 seats in 3,358 gram panchayats, 16,814 were uncontested and of the 9,217 seats in 341 panchayat samitis, 3,059 were uncontested. The other seats did not require voting as they went uncontested. Strict security arrangements have been made for the polls, and about 1,500 security personnel have been deployed from Assam, Odisha, Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh.
