PM Modi 'influencing' voters with Nepal visit: Congress

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Saturday questioned the timing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Nepal tour and his visit to an iconic temple on the day of Karnataka polling.

In response to the veteran Congress leader's questioning, BJP's Meenakshi Lekhi hit out at Ashok Gehlot over his comments, saying Prime Minister's Nepal visit was scheduled much earlier than the announcement of Karnataka poll dates by the Election Commission.

This is the third visit of PM Modi to Nepal, and the first high-level visit from India since the formation of the new government in Nepal this year.

"This is not a good tradition in a democracy".

Narendra Modi, who is now on a two-day visit to Nepal to strengthen Indo-Nepal ties, visited Muktinath temple on Saturday and offered prayers.

After a high-voltage campaigning for weeks, voting for 222 of the 224-member Assembly was being held in Karnataka on Saturday. After praying, he also greeted and interacted with people waiting at the temple premises.

"When PM Modi had telephoned Prime Minister Oli upon his election as the Prime Minister of Nepal, they had discussed the visit then".

He also briefed Nepal's Parliament on Modi's visit.

The Congress leader's insinuation was that the visit to the Lord Shiva's temple was primarily aimed at wooing the dominant Lingayat caste who were Shivaites.

Asked about the PM's itinerary coinciding with the Karnataka polls, Gokhale said: "Whenever state visits take place, they are decided as per the convenience of the two nations". Interestingly, the criticism came just a few days after Congress chief said the growing frequency of his temple visits are bothering BJP.
