Primary Election 2018: Voter's guide

Thirty-two years ago Nebraska voters put Kay Orr in the governor's seat, the first Republican governor to be elected in the U.S. Her challenger that year was another woman. Eastman pitched herself to voters as a progressive political newcomer, unlike Ashford, a proud moderate who promised to build relationships with Republicans if voters sent him back to Congress. Social worker Kara Eastman earned 51 percent of the vote to defeat former Congressman Brad Ashford in yesterday's Democratic primary.

Kara Eastman, who fully supports abortion and universal healthcare, won the Democratic nomination for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District in a surprise upset in the Democratic primary.

GOP incumbent Don Bacon ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

The other Democratic hopefuls who ran were retired farmer, attorney and judge Frank Svoboda of Lincoln; retired Fremont real estate broker Larry Marvin; and Chris Janicek, the owner of an Omaha specialty cake business. First District Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry had no challenger yesterday, but he will face the victor of the Democratic primary, Jessica McClure, in November. The veteran state lawmaker campaigned on promises that he would take a less partisan approach to state government than Ricketts. No other candidates are running for the office.

Nebraska state Sen. John Murante won the Republican nomination for state treasurer and is all but certain to get the job in November.
