Damaging winds and hail are the greatest severe weather threats Saturday afternoon. However there is the chance for an isolated tornado

The severe thunderstorm watch is from 12:30 p.m. Monday until 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A large complex of showers and thunderstorms originating over MI will move southeast across the area through early this afternoon.

Some of the storms could produce large hail and damaging winds of 60 miles per hour or more, the weather service said.

Some storms may also produce hail, the alert said. Forecasters say serious storms expected to start after 5 p.m. could bring flash flooding, lime-sized hail (no, that's not a typo for dime), and 80-mph wind gusts.

Strong storms have developed near Emporia, prompting severe thunderstorm warnings for portions of the area. Regardless of further development or not, Friday may feature period of rain in our region that could be on the heavy side and perhaps come with gusty winds.

The colder weather continued Saturday, with the high temperature in the lower 50s and drizzle throughout the day.

Here's a look at where the greatest chance of severe weather will occur and where the National Weather Service has the highest risk. The front is likely to organize these storms into a broken line, oriented WSW-ENE and sagging southward across the Mason-Dixon Line during early evening. The environment northeast of us also contains stronger wind shear (winds increasing with altitude). There is a 20 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms Thursday.

It's looking more likely that things will stay quiet for Richmond during the afternoon commute, but storms could swoop in from the northwest sometime this evening.
