Former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova was so irate with an umpire in Rome that she smashed the umpire's chair with her racquet several times - instead of shaking hands - after a stunning loss to Maria Sakkari.

After both women met each other at the net, Pliskova refused to shake the umpire's hands before bashing a noticeable hole in the umpire's chair as the crowd and Sakkari watched on in shock.

At 5-5 in the third, Pliskova got engaged in a lengthy argument after she had an overhead smash called out. Pliskova argued but the call ultimately stood even though replay clearly showed Pliskova's ball catching the line.

Pliskova's twin sister Kristyna took to Twitter to defend her, claiming Mrozinska as the "worst she has ever seen" and hoped that she would "never referee" a match involving herself or her sister.

Karolina Pliskova is now the world number six in the women's singles rankings, and topped the pile as recently as July 2017.

Sakkari went on to break Pliskova's serve on the back of he decision and served out the match to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
