Business as usual in North Korea as public unaware of summit

Kim told Lee that if his meeting with Trump is successfully held, Singapore's efforts will be historically recognized, expressing gratitude for the city-state's provision of convenience to the North's delegation.

The official said Trump and Kim would hold a one-on-one meeting on Tuesday that could last up to two hours.

Trump responded to such commentary on Twitter, saying: "The fact that I am having a meeting is a major loss for the US, say the haters & losers".

Pyongyang has said it is willing to deal away its entire nuclear arsenal if the United States provides it with a reliable security assurance and other benefits.

But once U.S. -North Korea negotiations on denuclearization brokered by South Korea began in earnest and a President Donald Trump-Kim summit seemed on the horizon, China did not want to be left out.

Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation to discuss final preparations for the meeting.

Earlier in the day, a team of USA negotiators arrived at the Ritz-Carlton hotel to meet with its North Korean counterparts to try to nail down final details for the summit, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days.

The meeting was Trump's only scheduled public event today.

It "would instead lay out practical steps with requisite commitments from North Korea that demonstrate that it understands, accepts and is committed to achieving denuclearization as the USA defines it", said Enos, who is also in Singapore to watch the proceedings. North Korea acts as China's buffer against the US -backed South Korea and the USA key ally, Japan; thus, it is effectively a satellite nation of China's communist regime. He initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States.

A plane presumably carrying North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in Singapore ahead of Kim's summit Tuesday with President Donald Trump.

When Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un meet in Singapore to discuss the parameters of a deal that would potentially denuclearize North Korea this week, they will be joined by NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, for some freakish reason. Trump arrived later in the day from a fraught G7 meeting with world leaders in Canada.

Kim arrived on an Air China jet, NPR's Elise Hu reports.

A suite on the 20th floor of St. Regis Hotel, where Kim is staying, costs more than 13,000 Singaporean dollars a night. He has also raised the possibility of further summits.
