The Islamic holy month of fasting is the first and only day in the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast.

The Interior Ministry has declared Friday, June 15, 2018, as a public holiday.

The International Astronomical Centre said the moon crescent may be seen through a telescope from the east and southeast of Asia and Europe on Thursday, June 14.

"This year some 11.5 million people will leave the capital Dhaka to go back to their villages to celebrate Eid", said Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, general secretary of the Passengers Welfare Association.

Sultan Bin Saeed Al Badi Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice, issued a ministerial resolution setting up the Shawwal moon-sighting committee for the current Hijri year 1439 to determine the first day of Eid Al Fitr.

Due to the Islamic calendar being based on lunar cycles, there is not a fixed date for Eid 2018.

"If it is sighted on Thursday then the holiday will be on Friday, if the moon is sighted on Friday or Saturday, the holiday will be on Monday", the ministry says.

Historically, the UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia tend to call Ramadan and Eid on the same days.

The National Motorway Company of Morocco (ADM) recommends drivers plan their trip in advance to avoid traffic jams during Eid al-Fitr.

Muslims are advised to follow the tradition of Prophet Mohammed and bathe before Eid prayers, wearing perfume and new clothes.
