Word does get around, however, and the prospect of a meeting between Kim and Trump had already been on the public's radar.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un meets Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong Sunday.

He thanked Singapore's organisation of the summit as if it was "their own family affair".

At the table, Trump told his hosts: "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely".

Trump arrived in Singapore calling the summit a "one-time shot" for Kim, who is being urged to abandon his weapons program and normalize relations with the rest of the world in exchange for unspecified "protections" from the U.S. North Korea has long anxious about an American invasion and justifies its nuclear buildup as a way to defend itself.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday's meeting appeared aimed at making 11th-hour progress ahead of the summit since Sung Kim's earlier talks did little to narrow a gap between the two sides on the definition of denuclearisation or win agreement on tangible commitments from Pyongyang toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal.

Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a US official said. However, it can not be the only topic of discussion between Trump and Kim.

Security is tight ahead of the summit between two unpredictable men who in the past have threatened to destroy the other's country during the stand-off over North Korea's nukes.

Mr Kim arrived on a plane loaned from China along with his outspoken Foreign Minister, Ri Yong-ho, Defence Minister No Kwang-chol and his sister Kim Yo-jong.

Donald Trump is promising big things can happen to the North Korean economy in return for moving away from its nuclear programme.

Choi's fiery outburst at Trump's national security advisor John Bolton and Vice President Mike Pence had a fortnight ago been blamed for Trump suddenly, and briefly, cancelling the summit.

But last month, Trump abruptly cancelled the Singapore summit, citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" by Pyongyang.

North Korea's state-run KCNA agency meanwhile commented for the first time on the landmark meeting, describing the event as an opportunity for the two sides to exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on bilateral ties. "And he has that opportunity, and he won't have that opportunity again", Trump said.

"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets. Create peace and great prosperity for his land.

Trump landed in the evening after a long flight from Canada and the Group of Seven meeting there, telling Singaporean officials who welcomed him that he was feeling "very good" about the summit. "Prime Minister Lee and Chairman Kim discussed Singapore-DPRK relations, developments in the DPRK and regional developments, including the recent positive developments on the Korean Peninsula", the statement reads.

If the North Korean leader does indeed agree to completely abandon his country's nuclear weapons programme, Trump is expected to ease sanctions on the hermit kingdom and pave the way for much-needed foreign direct investment in the country.
