"We are fortunate as a community to have so many outstanding people willing to dedicate themselves to the betterment of our nation and it is only fitting that they have today been recognised through the Australian Honours system".

Following a wave of terror attacks which struck the United Kingdom in 2017, former assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Mark Rowley, who led the national response, is honoured with a knighthood.

The brother of aid worker David Haines, who was murdered by Islamic State extremists, is made an OBE for his work against terrorism.

The 55-year-old joked that although he was genuinely surprised - and a little overwhelmed - to receive the news, he won't be changing what he does.

When accepting her Australian of the Year award in 1964 she said: "I have always been involved in a lot of controversy with officialdom, but I have always fought for something I believed in".

"I like to think this award honours that, and the importance of literature and creativity in the classroom".

Joseph Berry was also awarded a BEM for services to music and the community in Newry.

Other sporting figures honoured include AFL great Bob Skilton, former rugby league player Max Krilich, Barton Sinclair and Anthony Bell, all of whom have been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

"Although my work is challenging, my aim is to ensure that the young people in my care have a positive experience of mental health services and that they are supported through their journey on the way to recovery".

The President of Cosmetic Executive Women, Caroline Neville, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Forty-nine percent of the honorees are women, while 10% of all those on the list are from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
