"I just want to say one thing", DeNiro said from the stage at New York's Radio City Music Hall, before introducing a performance by Bruce Springsteen.

"Angels", Tony Kushner's epic about AIDS during the Reagan years, also won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play.

The cast and producers of "The Band's Visit" pose backstage with their awards, which include the Tony for Best Musical.

What's so wonderful about the Tony Awards, by contrast, is how seamlessly it blends a celebration of the august and rarified art of theater with the exuberant, zero-chill joy of being a theater geek. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get tickets to Bruce Springsteen's show on Broadway?

According to US Today, Tony Award victor John Tiffany, who won for his role in the hit Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, was making his way into the media room just as the Meet The Focker's actor went rogue. "So this is for the people who lose/Most of us have been in your shoes", they sang in the upbeat opening number. She was among six nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical.

The victor for best featured actress in a musical was Lindsay Mendez for her work in the revival of "Carousel". She told the crowd how early in her career, she'd been encouraged to change her last name to Matthews to better her chances of playing non-minority roles. To all artists out there, she said: "Just be your true self and the world will take note". Onstage guests were volunteers and staffers from three organisations that bring relief to areas impacted by natural disasters.

Airing on Sunday, the awards show will recognize the best of Broadway's 2017-18 season. The Tonys didn't specifically address that, but did touch on gun violence, depression, politics and inclusion.
