Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) released a statement saying the two discussed mutual relations and the situation on the Korean peninsula, with Prime Minister Lee thanking Kim for his and Trump's "bold and admirable decision" to hold the summit.

Trump said Tuesday at the beginning of expanded discussions with aides from both countries that "We will solve a big problem" and "a big dilemma".

Kim Jong Un departed Pyongyang Sunday in an Air China Boeing 747 plane for a 10-hour flight to Singapore.

"I guess the attention of all our people must now be directed toward Singapore", Moon said.

For North Korea, who has long sought legitimacy on the worldwide stage, the meeting was a historic opportunity to show that it carries weight. I never had no one to hear me.

Rodman later said he asked Kim to release the student "three times" during that visit, and he urged the North Korean leader to do so as an act of "good faith".

The North Korean leader and Trump appeared nervous when they sat down according to a body language expert. "It's awesome when I said those things, when I said those damn things, when I went back home, I got so many death threats", Rodman said. Have a handshake, have a smile, have a glass of iced tea.

He said on Thursday that he didn't think he had to prepare very much for the summit and that "it's about attitude".

Mr Trump will leave the country that same evening to return to the US.

"When I got home (from North Korea in 2014), I got so many death threats". I said to everybody, the door will open. I was the only one who felt so. "All that I think gave them confidence that this was the right site, the right choice".

Trump had been scheduled to fly back to Washington tomorrow morning after spending today with Kim in Singapore, but on the eve of the summit, he altered his schedule, opting to return at about 8pm today after a full day of meetings with Kim - nearly 15 hours earlier than previously anticipated.

It will be the first ever meeting between a sitting US President and North Korean leader. And I believe North Korea and when I came home, I couldn't even go home. "Both the American as well as the North Koreans are pleased with the arrangements, we're all set to go and things will start happening within the next 24 hours".

The Canadian prime minister had said at a press conference after the G-7 meeting that Canada would respond in kind to any USA tariffs, and this was apparently a profound threat to President Trump's upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un.

"Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly....but in the end, that doesn't matter", Trump tweeted before his encounter with Kim. "This guy wants to be around the world, he wants to come to America, he wants to enjoy his life, he wants his people to enjoy this life".

About 2,500 journalists have descended in Singapore to report the summit.
