Welbeck had a late return to pre-season due to England's run to the World Cup semi-finals and will not be involved in Arsenal's season opener against champions Manchester City on Sunday.

The north London side are now preparing for their first season under Unai Emery following his appointment at The Emirates as Arsene Wenger's successor back in May. To say it here is easier than doing it on the pitch.

Emery praised City boss Guardiola, whom he faced at Barcelona while coaching Almeria and Valenca, saying: "His career as a player is bigger than mine and his career as a coach is also bigger than mine".

"We only have three players - Carl Jenkinson, David Ospina and Joel Campbell, with the possibility to leave", Emery said. "It's for that on Sunday I want first to be together with our supporters".

Regarded as a football savant cut from the same cloth as the obsessive Wenger, Emery has impressed Arsenal's players with his detailed video analysis, spending up to 12 hours ahead of each game working on footage for his squad. Above all, it is about confidence in ourselves to do the best match on Sunday.

Arsenal take on City without injured defensive duo Laurent Koscielny and Sead Kolasinac, while Aaron Ramsey will be hoping to be fit to take his place in midfield.

"The match is going to give us the information [of what] is our level", he said. "And [we are] keeping a lot of the good ideas they were working with here, and also bringing my new [ideas] for how to improve in the tactical things, or my idea to transmit to the players my spirit".

Emery also risked the early wrath of the Arsenal supporters as he suggested majority shareholder Stan Kroenke's move to take complete control of the club is a positive thing.

Unai Emery told Arsenal's official website.

And the former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla coach has stressed the importance of Arsenal being on the front foot.
