Arson wildfire threatens thousands of homes south of Los Angeles

Maryland firefighters head west to battle wildfires

Several fires are burning throughout California, including one that is the largest fire in the Golden State's history.

On Thursday afternoon, the flames raced downhill toward Lake Elsinore, threatening homes and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for homes fronting the mountains. Two weeks ago, he came to Milligan's home to return items he "borrowed" from the fire department, the volunteer fire chief said.

California is now in the midst of a pretty serious wildfire crisis. But firefighters also made progress, with containment doubling from 5 to 10 per cent.

Clark, 51, is charged with three counts of arson, resisting arrest and deterring an executive officer.

"Until this thing is barking at my door, I'm going to stick with it", he said.

Clark spoke to a videographer from OnScene outside his Holy Jim Canyon prior to his arrest, insisting he had nothing to do with the fire.

Experts warn that worsening weather conditions, with thunderstorms in the forecast, could lead to "extreme fire behaviour" over the next few days, he adds.

Arraignment for the man suspected of starting the Holy Fire will happen Friday with or without him after he refused to leave his jail cell for his first hearing.

Information released by the Cleveland National Forest, which is where the fire is burning, indicates that in addition to the weather, steep terrain, and limited access, another reason they are losing ground is they are not able to obtain all the firefighting resources they have requested.

The Holy Fire was one of almost 20 blazes across California, which is seeing earlier, longer and more destructive wildfire seasons because of drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change and home construction deeper into forests.

Forrest Clark, 51, was charged with setting the fire, the Orange County District Attorney Office said. Firefighters fought a desperate battle to stop the Holy Fire from reaching homes.

Castro left his home of eight years and joined the line of cars snaking out of Lake Elsinore. He also claimed he had been threatened by the MS-13 gang.

For two weeks a boring haze and the faint smell of smoke from more than a dozen distant blazes have blanketed many California cities, forcing summer campers to stay inside, obscuring normally bright skylines and leaving cars covered with ash.

New evacuations were ordered Wednesday.

Lake Elsinore Mayor Natasha Johnson and her family were among the families evacuating Thursday, Councilman Bob Magee said at a community meeting about the fire.

People watch flames from the Holy Fire outside Glen Ivy Hot Springs in Corona, California, southeast of Los Angeles, on August 10, 2018.

"May I pay for that immediately?" asked Clark, who could face life in prison if convicted.

The fire was reported about 1:15 p.m. Monday near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek roads, Orange County Fire Authority Capt.
