Elliott had a fast vehicle all day - he won the race's second stage - but he also benefited when a couple of strong contenders suffered freaky mishaps during a pit stop. It was a two-car race as the rest of the field was more than 11 seconds back.

Truex was bidding to become the first Cup driver to win three consecutive road races since Tony Stewart accomplished the feat just over a decade ago (2004-05). Truex climbed to fourth, dropping Johnson to 13th and out of the running for the 10-minute second round.

Elliott's victory came in his 99th Cup start and was the 250th victory for Hendrick Motorsports, breaking a 37-race losing streak for one of NASCAR's signature teams. Elliott pulled out to a half-second lead while Truex was fighting to get back to the front after a restart mired him in 12th. Joey Logano then went off track in the inner loop and wound up driving through the gravel pit. He beat AJ Allmendinger by 3.3 seconds. Aric Almirola and Ryan Blaney made contact in Turn 7 on Lap 3.

Busch took charge on the restart, pulling away to a lead of almost three seconds over Truex, with Hamlin third and Chase Elliott fourth. He won at Sonoma, California, the only other true road course on the regular-season schedule, in late June and is the defending Watkins Glen victor.

Elliott held off defending race victor, Martin Truex, Jr., in the closing laps. His last Xfinity Series race was in October 2005 at Memphis.

Elliott led 52 out of 90 laps after starting the race in third.

The race got off to an exciting start with an early battle for the lead between teammates Denny Hamlin and Busch.

Hamlin traversed the 2.45-mile layout at 125.534 miles per hour in qualifying on Saturday, just ahead of series points leader Kyle Busch.

Mired in a confounding losing streak since the start of his NASCAR Cup career in 2016, Chase Elliott finally broke into the win column Sunday, holding off road course ace Martin Truex Jr.to win the Go Bowling at the Glen event at Watkins Glen.

Elliott held off a hard charge from defending NASCAR Cup series champion Martin Truex Jr.to claim his maiden victory. NASCAR returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan next weekend for the Consumer's Energy 400, at Michigan International Speedway.

Racing announced Saturday afternoon that the NASCAR Hall of Famer would race in the August 26 Xfinity Series race at Road America.
