Donald Trump condemns racism on anniversary of violent Charlottesville alt-right rally

Maryland, DC Prepare For Unite The Right Rally

Students and activists are rallying Saturday evening at the University of Virginia's campus in Charlottesville to mark the one-year anniversary of the Virginia White Nationalist Rally.

He called for the nation to "come together" after a week in which he stoked racial divisions with attacks on black athletes and other minorities. "Peace to ALL Americans!" he tweeted.

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Peter Newsham answer questions from reporters about the city's preparations for the white nationalist-led rally marking the one-year anniversary of 2017 Charlottesville "Unite the Right", protests in Washington, August 9, 2018.

The president infamously blamed protesters "on many sides" for the conflict instead of specifically criticizing the racist sentiment that spurred the tragedy.

Trump came under heavy criticism, including from Republicans, for initially refusing a year ago to explicitly condemn white supremacists.

Though speeches at the rally aren't scheduled to begin until 5:30 p.m., some counterprotesters plan to start hours earlier, and police will start closing downtown streets at 8 a.m., mainly around the White House and into Foggy Bottom.

Organized by Unite the Right - the same network that called last year's protest in Charlottesville, Virginia - Sunday's rally will once again see the extremists stand face-to-face with anti-fascists, who are staging a counter protest.

"Rather than tearing each other down with hatred, racism & violence, we can lift one another up, strengthen our communities and strive to help every American achieve his or her full potential!"

Carlson's group locked arms and chanted slogans of their own, including "Black Lives Matter!" and "No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA!".

"We are treating this as a statewide event", said Virginia Department of Emergency Management coordinator Jeff Stern.

The crowd's goal was to reclaim the space that was taken a year ago by a white supremacists' rally.

With many commenters noting her father defended "both sides" at the time, Ivanka got an earful for saying too little, too late.

Violent fighting broke out between attendees and counter-protesters that day.

Last year's torch rally is something students won't forget, but they say this movement is now bigger than that. Attended mainly by opponents of white supremacists and more mainstream conservatives, the progressive activists carried a large banner through the downtown of the city reading: "Good Night, White Pride".

Authorities eventually forced the crowd to disperse, but a vehicle later barreled into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The day's death toll rose to three when a state police helicopter that had been monitoring the event and assisting with the governor's motorcade crashed, killing two troopers.

He continued: "What about the "alt-left" that came charging at, as you say, the 'alt-right, ' do they have any semblance of guilt?", he said. Kessler said on Thursday that he would be in Washington on Saturday, as well, and that he did not know of any plans for other events in Charlottesville. "They are afraid of us because we are demanding change from the university", Carlson said.
