The military said an Israeli tank shelled the Hamas post after troops came under fire. The IDF said it launched the strike in response to fire coming from the Gaza Strip.

"Targeting Abu-Hussein and Murtaja was a clear example of the flagrant Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists", the report said.

Israel has fought three wars with Palestinian militants in Gaza since 2008 and says the blockade is necessary to keep them from obtaining weapons or materials that could be used for military purposes.

The incident took place amid Egyptian efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian militant group, which controls the coastal strip.

Israel's security cabinet discussed the proposal on Sunday, but afterwards ministers said only that the Israeli military was "prepared for any scenario". The video then cuts to separate footage of a shell hitting the post and an explosion.

United Nations and Egyptian-led efforts are under way to mediate a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas that would end a four-month upsurge of violence along the Israel-Gaza border.

At least 158 Palestinians have been killed in four months of weekly border protests and one Israeli soldier was shot dead by a Gaza sniper.

On Monday, Israel responded to the launching of flaming balloons from Gaza into southern Israel by launching an airstrike, injuring two Gazans.

Israeli soldiers attacked with force on Monday Palestinian civilians who were protesting Israel's destruction of water holes and pipes that were supplying their villages in the northern Jordan Valley with badly needed water, according to participants in the protest.
