Manafort suggested Chicago banker Calk as Army secretary, according to Gates

Judge Ellis ‘I’m not patient so don’t try my patience

The federal judge in the trial of U.S. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort expressed contrition on Thursday to jurors after berating prosecutors for allowing a witness to watch the proceedings, despite having given his earlier approval. While President Donald Trump has not played a significant role in the trial, Gates testified on Tuesday that after the election, Manafort recommended a banker who loaned him money to be Trump's Army secretary.

IRS agent Michael Welch said the total includes foreign wire transfers to US vendors like landscapers and clothiers, wire transfers to buy property, and income reclassified as loans.

In a tense day in court, the campaign strategist's longtime deputy, Rick Gates, told jurors how the pair were paid by Ukrainian oligarchs for their work as political consultants in the country. "I am trying to change".

The case against Manafort has little to do with either man's work for the Trump campaign and there's been no discussion during the trial about whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation - the central question Mueller's team has tried to answer.

Gates explained that Manafort's financial difficulties worsened in 2014, when Viktor Yanukovych was no longer in power and the Party of Regions disintegrated.

I take pride when my clients say "thank you", this recognition of our impact on their success is rewarding.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to charges in both cases.

Prosecutors say Manafort misrepresented his debts to Citizens Bank when securing the $3.4 million mortgage, and ultimately obtained the mortgage by attesting that the other property had no mortgages.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that objective.

The sidebar conversation - which the court's stenographer could hear, but which Gates, the jury and reporters in the room could not - came after Manafort attorney Kevin Downingasked Gates if he'd spoken to the special counsel's team about his time at the Trump campaign. The prosecution has presented pretty irrefutable evidence that Manafort used wires from his overseas bank accounts to pay for his personal domestic expenses, lied on loan applications, filed false tax returns and failed to disclose his network of overseas accounts.

But the grilling got more intense, and personal, when Mr Downing pressed Mr Gates about a "secret life" he said was funded by embezzlement, including an extra-marital affair that Mr Gates himself acknowledged.

"WTF", Mr Manafort wrote in response, "How could I be blindsided like this".

But Gates pleaded guilty months later and agreed to cooperate in Mueller's investigation of Manafort, the only American charged by the special counsel to opt for trial instead of a guilty plea. People in the packed public gallery could only try to lipread as they saw a grim-faced Andres make a series of hand gestures.

Those who dealt with Manafort's taxes also testified that even though they asked Manafort whether he maintained any bank accounts overseas, he told them no.

Manafort's defense attorneys have sought to paint Gates as an embezzler, a liar and the instigator of any criminal conduct.

The judge's comments come after prosecutors said in a written filing that Ellis had authorized Welch to watch the trial and the reprimand could have prejudiced the jury.

Under questioning by prosecutor Greg Andres, Gates walked the six-man, six-woman jury through the foreign bank accounts used by Manafort to receive payments from Ukrainian politicians - money that was not reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The crimes Manafort allegedly committed do not have bearing on that central question, but they were uncovered in the course of the special counsel investigation; this is the first trial resulting from Mueller's probe. He also admitted to stealing money from Manafort and having one extramarital affair.
