Georgia has been making efforts to restore territorial integrity of the country, said Georgia's ambassador to Turkey on the 10th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war.

In addition to South Ossetia, the region of Abkhazia also received Russian support to break from Tbilisi; Moscow recognises both regions as independent and has been pressuring its allies to do the same.

During their joint appearance on Tuesday (7 August), the foreign ministers recalled the events of 7 August 2008, when Russian Federation carried out armed aggression against Georgia, resulting in more than 150,000 people having to leave their homes and over 400 dead Georgian soldiers.

Medvedev added that NATO's expansion is a threat to Russian Federation.

Medvedev pointed to Moscow's recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and the Russian military bases there, saying that any attempt to change the status quo could lead to "extremely grave consequences".

Prime minister stressed that there is a different government in Georgia now.

Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev has said that a bad conflict could emerge from Georgia's accession into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation bloc and noted that there was no real justification of such risk.

The joint trip to Tbilisi followed in the footsteps of the late Polish President Lech Kaczyński, who in August 2008 organised a visit in support of Georgia.

NATO now supports Georgia through the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package, a set of initiatives that provides resources to strengthen Georgia's defenses.

He added that "Russia's aggressive policy in the region, the lack of will to regulate the conflicts caused by the Kremlin, is a serious threat to post-war order in Europe and compliance with worldwide law".

During the July's NATO summit held in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had said Georgia would become a member of NATO. A decade on, "aggression against Georgia, Ukraine is part of Russian policy", the FM said, it violates worldwide law and "must be constantly observed by the global community, including a sanctions regime".
