Erik Karlsson seems shook after trade to Sharks

Given the current marketplace for top defencemen, sources say the Senators offered a deal in excess of $80 million over eight years during conversations with his camp on July 1. Sure, but if you're trading one of the best defensemen of all time, you need to see a high-end prospect coming back the other way. Karlsson said the deal still came as a shock but he is eager to begin work on a team that made the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 and lost to Vegas in the second round past year.

It's also just incredible that fans will have to endure another horrendous season while not having their own first round pick as compensation at the end of the year. With Karlsson in the fold, it's likely the Sabres will have the Sharks pick at the next draft.

Ottawa also gets a second-round pick in 2021 if Karlsson re-signs with the Sharks.

The Senators have said they are entering a rebuilding period and are planning to go with a young roster this season. You bring in a player like that, you look around the room, the type of players we have, our younger players getting better, bringing in a guy like Erik Karlsson, who's a (two-time) Norris Trophy victor, having another Norris Trophy victor in Brent Burns in the back end, there's really no excuses.

Karlsson has one year left on his contract and has been the subject of rumours dating to the trade deadline.

They'll also receive a 2021 second-round pick if Karlsson re-signs, and that pick is upgraded to a first-rounder if San Jose also makes the 2019 Stanley Cup Final. We're going to let our players dictate the course of how long the rebuild is going to be.

At the end of the day, it is fair to feel extremely sad, angry, and heart-broken for what has transpired, but I think it's also important to talk about how incredible Karlsson was as a Senator and how much he meant to the city.

Karlsson has scored 518 points in his career, by far the most of any defenseman since he entered the National Hockey League in 2009.

"It's a statement I think", Kane said.

"Why we are standing here today and how it all unfolded, I can't really tell you", said Karlsson, who came back from his ankle surgery to notch 53 assists and 62 points in 71 games a year ago.

A two-time Norris Trophy victor, Karlsson is a pending unrestricted free agent next July, due to break the bank as one of the top defensemen in the National Hockey League. We're in the mode of trying to win right now, and I think that's something that's attractive to him. In 627 career regular season games over nine seasons with Ottawa, he has tallied 126 goals and 518 points.

The Sharks made the addition without giving up a top-six forward or top-four defenseman.

"We only get to see him twice a year, but the thing that jumps out right away is just his skating ability", Pavelski said. "As you said, there's been a lot of noise for nearly a year now, but I never in my wildest imagination thought that I was going to leave this place".

The 24-year old Tierney was drafted 55th overall in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Sharks. He has 41 goals and 63 assists in 284 career games.

With this trade, the Sens have only guaranteed themselves of at least one first-round draft pick.
