FEMA administrator Brock Long is the target of an ongoing Department of Homeland Security inspector general investigation into whether he misused government vehicles during his commutes to North Carolina from Washington, according to three people familiar with the matter, including current and former administration officials.

Specifically, Long is accused of using government cars for personal weekend travel to his hometown of Hickory, North Carolina - which has drawn scrutiny from DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen as well as the inspector general.

Long said at a news conference Thursday morning that he will "fully cooperate" in an investigation into his alleged misuse of government resources for travel, an issue that has roiled several other former Trump Cabinet secretaries.

Long also said in a Thursday press briefing that he "would never intentionally run a program incorrectly" and meant to cooperate with the investigation.

"Bottom line is if we made mistakes in the way the program was run then we will work with the OIG to get those corrected. Doing something unethical is not in my DNA, it is not part of my track record", Long told reporters at a briefing on the storm.

Long would use a staff driver to drive him to North Carolina, Politico reported. "We will work with the OIG".

The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency has thousands of modular homes on hand along with other temporary housing options tested by last year's spate of storms, as Hurricane Florence bears down on the U.S. Southeast, the agency said on Thursday.

Both FEMA and ICE are agencies managed by DHS. She called Long "an experienced and respected emergency manager".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to comment to CNN on conversations about Long's future, and referred questions to DHS.

"All questions about any potential investigation by the Office of the Inspector General should be directed to the IG".

Nearly a year after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, there is a lot of pressure on FEMA to respond effectively to Florence. Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin was sacked in March amid questionable travel charges and a growing rebellion in his agency about the privatization of medical care.
