Serbia's Novak Djokovic reacts after his win against Japan's Kei Nishikori during the Men's Singles Semi Finals match at the 2018 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York

6-3 victory over the 2009 victor under the roof at Arthur Ashe stadium - rain in NY meant cover was needed - gave the Serb a third crown at the US Open and 14th grand slam title overall.

Clearly Djokovic will have to neutralise the 6'6" Argentine's blistering serve at the Arthur Ashe Stadium: "Del Potro fired 68 aces during the tournament, winning 82 percent of his first serve points.

The Serbian sixth seed is making his eighth U.S. Open final appearance, tying an professional era record, while Del Potro, seeded third, is playing in a Grand Slam final for just the second time.

Djokovic is one of only seven players in the sport's history to achieve double figures in terms of grand slam titles, yet remarkably one of three who continue to play today.

The top two positions remain unchanged with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer claiming the first and second spots, respectively.

But Del Potro needed more than just goodwill to beat Djokovic at his best, he needed his mighty forehand to be flawless and the rest of his game to back it up. Del Potro then held at love and had chances for another break on his next opportunity before Djokovic finally held to end a 22-point game that lasted more than 20 minutes.

When he led 3-1 in the second, Djokovic appeared to be cruising to a 15th win in 19 attempts against del Potro.

All that frustration was washed away when he struck the overhead victor to clinch victory over Del Potro, Djokovic falling to his back, arms and legs spread savouring the moment.

This follows a two-year Slam drought for the 31-year-old Serb, who suddenly is tied with Pete Sampras for the third-most major trophies by a man, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 and Rafael Nadal's 17.

And the next time we all get together will be at the Australian Open, the tournament he has made his own.

"I guess we'll be hiking some more very soon", he added with a smile.

For Djokovic, this has been a triumphant summer after his difficulties of the past two years and the low of elbow surgery in February.

"I've been during all my career learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often. I know that he will be here again with the champions trophy".

"He has 14 already".

Djokovic will now set his sights on conquering a different summit by reclaiming his place atop the world tennis rankings for the first time since October 2016. I had my opportunities during the second and third set but I was playing nearly at the limit all the time ... and I couldn't make it because Novak was there every time. Djokovic, up a set, was serving at 3-4 when the two proceeded to play 23 points.

Speaking at the post game press conference, Australia's latest sporting hero was proud of how he performed, before pointing to criticism he was bound to receive from cyberbullies online.

The tennis world is split over whether the 47-year-old should have used greater discretion before penalising Williams because of the actions of her coach - or given her another warning before docking her a game for verbal abuse.
