Goalkeeper Lloris, 31, was fined £50,000 and banned from driving for 20 months on Wednesday after being convicted of drink-driving in his £140,000 Porsche.

The police officer named Henry Fitch also revealed that Lloris was driving at 15mph in a 30mph zone and veering towards parked cars before correcting himself.

Lloris was spectacular during the World Cup and gave up no goals in either France's tough quarter-final match-up against Uruguay or their semi-final against a unsafe Belgium side. "On 15th of July, he was the proudest man of the planet", attorney David Sonn said in reference to the day Lloris and his France team lifted the World Cup trophy in Moscow. And the court said the France captain provided a sample containing 80 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

Magistrate Amanda Barron said it was "pure luck" Lloris "did not cause damage to other vehicles or pedestrians", and that his actions had put his life, and that of his passenger, at risk.

She said: "This is a very serious offence, as you know".

"He had booked a taxi but unfortunately the taxi cancelled at the last minute". I made a mistake.
