Florence remains a powerful category four hurricane

Isaac is forecast to gradually weaken over the next few days, and could degenerate into a tropical wave during that time.

Hurricane Florence, now a Category 2 storm, is slowly approaching the USA coast, and the storm's massive fury is on full display in video footage taken from the International Space Station.

Its top sustained winds have dropped to 70 miles per hour (110 kph), and it's at a near standstill, moving west at just 3 miles per hour (6 kph).

Hurricane Florence made landfall early Friday morning, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue storm surge warnings for both Carolinas. Maximum sustained winds Friday morning were near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's student paper, The Daily Tar Heel, reported that class has been canceled and students have been encouraged to leave the Chapel Hill area before the storm hits. A small-craft warning and a high-surf advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m., today until 6 a.m. Friday, September 14. More than 60 people had to be rescued in another town as a cinderblock motel collapsed at the height of the storm's fury.

Roy Cooper, the governor of North Carolina urged people not to return home too early as major flooding is still anticipated.

The National Hurricane Center states that these storm surges are highly likely along portions of the coastlines of North Carolina and SC. Mandatory evacuations have been issued for much of the SC and North Carolina coastline. Then on Sunday, as a weakening Florence moves away from our region, our winds will gradually weaken during the day, with some wraparound showers possible. Some forecasting models say that the storm could dump as many as 35 inches of rain in some areas.

According to the latest Hurricane Florence satellite images, the massive storm is now heading towards North and SC and Virginia. "Interests there should monitor the progress of this system, and refer to products from their local weather office", the NHC warned.

Meteorologists are also keeping an eye on yet another tropical disturbance that's spinning in the western Gulf of Mexico.
